National Zoo Keeper Appreciation Week
July 19-25, 2009
Come & Celebrate With The NEW Zoo Crew!

Thank You Zookeepers
In recognition of the dedication of zoo keepers, the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) and zoos across the nation celebrate National Zookeeper Week! During the week, zoos nationwide honor animal care professionals and the work they do in animal care, conservation, and education.
Free Cake For First 500 Visitors
Thank you, Linda Immel
Linda Immel, a generous donor and dedicated volunteer of the NEW Zoo, came up with a “delicious” way to celebrate! The first 500 visitors who come to the Zoo Wednesday, July 22nd will receive a piece of cake! Immel declared,”The NEW Zoo has incredibly talented zoo keepers that dedicate a lot of time and effort to ensure exceptional quality care. I would like to celebrate this honorary week and help the general public understand the importance of the work that they do”.
About Zoo “keepers”
The title “keeper” encompasses a very broad range of animal care duties. NEW Zoo “keepers” fulfill many roles in an effort to ensure the safety, security, comfort and well-being of our very important animal friends at the zoo. From preparing diets and maintaining exhibits as clean, natural habitats to acting as spokespersons for endangered species-zoo keepers are skilled specialists when it comes to multi-tasking in effective, efficient and creative ways.
NEW Zoo is AZA Accredited
The NEW Zoo is an accredited member of the AZA (Association for Zoos & Aquariums) and is one of only 6 accredited zoos in the country that does not receive local or regional tax support towards operational expenses. To be accredited, the zoo must meet exceptional standards in animal care, wildlife conservation and public education. Our zoo keepers play a vital and instrumental role in ensuring that these strict standards are met on a daily basis.
