Questions?
The NEW Zoo is currently recruiting interns for the 2010 summer semester. This is a unique opportunity for students to gain practical experience in a zoological setting. All internships can be taken for academic credit, based on guidelines from your education institution. All internships are non-paid and duration varies. Application acceptance is currently ongoing.
This internship is geared towards those students interested in environmental education, working with children, and/or learning to care for and handle program animals. Interns will work closely with NEW Zoo Docents and the Education Programs Coordinator, gaining valuable, hands-on experience in the following:
Qualifications: Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment. Enthusiasm about education, working with children, and a willingness to do public presentations are a necessity. Must be reliable, prompt, and detail-oriented. Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
This internship is meant for students interested in going into the field of marketing or business management. Marketing Interns will work closely with the zoo’s Operations Manager, Visitor Center staff and Mayan Restaurant staff, learning about the day-to-day workings of the organization. Depending on the semester, interns may also help with the promotion, organization, and coordination of any of several special events held at the NEW Zoo throughout the year.
Qualifications: Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment. Must be reliable, prompt, and detail-oriented. Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
All interns must dedicate a required number of hours to the NEW Zoo organization. We recommend 30 hours per week during Summer internships (minimum of 300 hours total) and 10 hours per week during Fall and Spring semester internships (minimum of 100 hours total).
Interns must also complete an “Intern Project” to benefit the Zoo. Projects must be completed prior to the end of the internship. Each intern will be assigned a project by the Education Programs Coordinator (Zoo Education interns) or the Operations Manager (Zoo Marketing interns). Project assignments will vary and will be based on the intern’s skills and interests, as well as the needs of the NEW Zoo at the time of the internship.
Any college or university student aged 18 or older can apply. You must download and complete the Internship Application and submit it with all other required application materials (listed in the application).
